The Winter Antiques Show, New York 2009

At the Winter Antiques Show we will do a special exhibition on ‘porcelain paintings’; Dutch Delftware plaques. These plaques were used as framed wall decoration, just as if they were paintings on panel, canvas or copper. Some plaques even have the reverse chamfered like a wood panel prepared for a painting -- one of many hints that in the 17th and 18th centuries, the decorative and fine arts were particularly symbiotic -- and no art stood alone.  It might be said, however, that at times, Dutch Delftware stood above.

The exhibition is accompanied by a new publication, named Dutch Delftware, Plaques: A Blueprint of Delft. In this benchmark publication and at the exhibition, we present an elegant and early plaque, entirely based on a print of Nicolaes Berchem.  But I feel especially privileged to have in our collection, the “extraordinarily rare” plaque that can be designated as “one of the largest plaques known to be made in Delft.”  Originally part of the collection of the Jewish pre-World War II dealer Mozes Mogrobi, this plaque was looted in 1942, restituted in 1948, but to the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam from which it finally was re-restituted to the descendants of Mogrobi in 2007.

Please do not hesitate to contact us, should you have any queries.

We look forward to seeing you in New York.
